The
debate around mobile phones
Currently, there is much debate around the effects of long term exposure to
the microwaves emitted by mobile phones. Indeed, there is a lot of uncertainty
within the scientific community around the long term safety of prolonged use,
although the evidence
is starting to mount.
What is known for certain is that the microwaves emitted by mobile phones do affect the cells in the
human body; the question is whether the effects of sustained
exposure over a period of time are likely to prove to be carcinogenic, or
have other health implications.
The current debate and uncertainty echo's those of the 1950s when the long-term effects of
smoking were emerging as a potential health risk - again, insufficient data was available to draw any conclusions with
certainty, it was only through decades of research, and through growing
first-hand experience, that scientists were eventually able
to identify the long-term implications.
Indeed, it may well be another
10+ years before we start to see the impact of extended exposure to these
artificial energy fields, such as is produced by mobile phones and Wi-Fi
networks. Will it by then be too late for many, or can we be confident that current
emission guidelines provide adequate protection?
